Godzilla or Gojira as he is called in Japanese, was announced as an official resident of Japan by the Shinjuku Ward office in April. Godzilla also appeared on the terrace of the Gracery Hotel in the neighborhood. The ward decided to introduce some “gamification” and announced that 3000 limited print residency papers will be distributed free to people who come asking for the same at the ward office.
HOLD ON, residency papers for Godzilla? Usually one can collect self residency papers or you can represent someone with appropriate attestation from the person to allow you to collect papers. Godzilla seems to be kind hearted enough that he has let go off his privacy rights and allowed the ward to distribute the residency papers with no lawsuits being filed by him 🙂
Since only 3000 copies are available, I made a trip to the Shinjuku before going to office early morning 08:30 a.m.
The location is Shinjuku Ward Office which you can access here. You need to pass all the entertainment district to reach the office.
Reached the ward office early at 08:00 a.m. and was asked to wait in line for 30 minutes. Of course I was the first person. in 30 minutes the line went up to 20 people or so. Interesting discussions followed with a Japanese man with his 8 year old kid also in queue. More than his kid, it was clear that he was a big fan of Godzilla.
I decided to get some coffee and went to a nearby Seven Eleven where there were Godzilla T-shirts also up for sale! Hmm commercial establishments making all they can with the Godzilla euphoria.
Went back to the queue and then! got the residency certificate for Godzilla!!!
Here are the details
Address: Shinjuku-ku, Kabuki-cho, 1-19-1
Date of birth: April 9, 1954 (the year of the release of the very first Godzilla film)
Date of becoming a Shinjuku resident: April 9, 2015
Reason for special residency: Promoting the entertainment of and watching over the Kabuki-cho neighborhood and drawing visitors from around the globe in the form of the Godzilla head built atop the Shinjuku TOHO Building
Previous visits to Shinjuku Ward: 3 times; Godzilla (1984), Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999)
Happy with the collection, I traced my way back to the Shinjuku Station passing by the Hotel Gracery and Godzilla was already marketing his PS4 game to be released on July 16, 2015.
Now that he is a resident, he should be a law abiding citizen and not eat children as we spotted him at Roppongi a couple of weeks back….
